Chapter 24

Jonas insisted on escorting us to the exit. Although Luke had said everyone was welcome, it was obvious that associating with Ryan was social suicide there. I squinted and used my hand to shield my eyes as we stepped back outside. The afternoon sun beat down and while the alleyway was empty, the moment all three of us were clear, the door morphed back into its dilapidated state. Jonas and Luke lingered by the exit, deep in conversation. I hovered like a third wheel, leaning my back against the wall and tilting my head up to catch a small patch of heat. Admittedly, I was only half trying to mind my own business, but with enhanced wolf hearing, I couldn’t help but overhear.

Luke towered over Jonas, who I now knew was a vampire thanks to my lesson. Luke’s shoulders were tense, and both of their expressions taut. To any bystanders, it looked as if they were arguing, which wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibilities. Apparently, the theory that vampires and werewolves don’t get along wasn’t a complete myth.

“I told you I needed to get him alive,” Luke hissed, dipping his head and lowering his tone. “You promised your guys wouldn’t hurt him.”

“I’m sorry, accidents happen. This guy wasn’t going down without a fight, and my coven couldn’t risk him running back to the witches.” Jonas sighed, wrapping his bony arms across his chest. “I know you need the intel, but if the witches catch you sniffing around again, you will end up like Alice.”

Luke’s hands balled into fists. I pricked my ears and focused in on their conversation, despite my wavering morals. My eyes remained trained on the cars flitting by the side street entrance.

“Don’t say that, we don’t know what happened to her.” The pain in his voice made my heart twist. After a brief pause, Luke sighed and scuffed the gravel with his foot. “You know they are hiding something. If you cared for her at all, you’ll make sure this trail doesn’t go dead. It’s the first news we have had in years.”

“I promise, I’ll keep on it,” Jonas said, and I snuck a quick peek in time to see him give Luke’s arm a gentle squeeze.

Luke nodded, his mouth set in a thin line. “I’ll continue doing my part too. Let me know if you hear anything.”

At that, Jonas pulled Luke into a hug, and I looked away. I kept my head down, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible, but Luke barely seemed to notice me as he walked past. When he didn’t wait, I bounded after him, slowing when I noticed him wringing his hands. Silver flashed in his glistening eyes when he finally turned to me.

“Are you okay?” I asked, wanting to reach out to him. I hesitated. “Luke?”

He shook his head, his jaw twitching. “No, but I’ll be fine. Let’s get you back to where you need to be.”

I wanted to help, to cheer him up somehow like he always did with me, but I couldn’t find the words.
